Conference Concept

The concept of Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) is an overarching goal for the forestry sector, appli­cable at international, national and sub-national levels. It recognizes that forests have important economic, environmental, social and cultural values which have to be continuously availed for the current and future generations.

IN QUEST OF SOLUTIONS TO SAVE THE MAU FOREST COMPLEX PDF Print E-mail

Some ten years ago, Kenya was in the regional and global limelight on conservation as the country set on a unique multi-sectorial and multi-stakeholder approach in finding immediate and long-term solutions to the serious degradation in its largest water tower. Top level government commitment and public participation were exemplary in articulating the necessary action plans.

The MTF report provided a roadmap to the restoration of the forest complex and its functions. Conservation fraternity was excited with the new dawn of thought and action on forests and had high hopes that similar initiatives would follow for other water towers. The private sector players were keen to join in the conservation of the Mau forest complex. The donor community appeared receptive to funding requests. There was great hope and energy.

As the only forestry professional body in the country, FSK has continued to play pivotal role in the growth and development of the forest sector. The society was a key partner in the development of the draft Forest Policy 2015, development and implementation of various forest related Legislations and National Strategies, including; Forest Act 2005, Climate change Act 2017, The Forest Conservation and Management Act 2016, Benefit sharing  Bill , various subsidiary legislations, Forestry Society Professional Bill 2016, and The National Forest Programme (NFP) 2016 – 2030. The society is also a member of KFS Board of Management, and advisor to various institutions on forestry matters.
